Asbestos garage roof removal
If you only need the old roof off, perhaps because the garage is being demolished or you already have a roofer lined up, removal on its own is a normal job. The same safety rules apply either way.
What the rules say
Most garage roofs are asbestos cement. HSE guidance treats careful removal of asbestos cement sheets, without breaking them, as non-licensed work. If the sheets are broken up a lot, or the material is damaged or crumbling, the work may become notifiable non-licensed work or even licensed work. That changes the notification, training and medical surveillance the contractor needs.
Whoever does the work must plan it, keep dust down, avoid breaking the sheets, wrap them and send them for authorised disposal. Asbestos waste is hazardous waste and cannot go in a skip or the household bin.
Waste and paperwork
Asbestos cement waste has to be double-wrapped or sealed in suitable packaging, labelled, and moved by a registered waste carrier to a site permitted to accept it. The paperwork records where the waste went. If a contractor cannot explain where your waste is going, that is a warning sign.
Removal only, or with a new roof
If the garage will be used again, you will need a new roof. Many owners find it simpler to have removal and replacement handled together, which also avoids leaving the building open to the weather.
